Getting a cheap flight ticket

I was looking for budget ticket to Kathmandu last week. I am sharing my experience of the same in this blog. It might be useful for you if you are also looking for less expensive flight to any destination. After goggling many sites for hours and talking with local travel agency, I came to the following conclusions.
  1. Start with budget airlines route if they are available from your departure point. There are many airlines flying especially in Europe and America with $1 plus the tax. These lowest fare schemes save your travel cost. If these schemes are not available, look for new or less popular airlines if they fly from your city.
  2. Look for flexible dates and time if you are not in hurry. It is better not to plan your trip just before or after special events or occasion if that is not the purpose of your travel. For example, during Christmas or New Year, the price is expensive and booking is high due to high number of travelers. Similarly, late Friday and early Monday trips are comparatively expensive than other days.
  3. Book early as possible but sometimes you may get best price just one or two days before the flight. Some airlines do not sell online ticket two days before the actual flight. However, you may ask for ‘last minute’ flight from airport or through travel agent.
  4. Compare local websites and universal websites. For example, if you are in Norway, try searching on .com or English site and Norwegian version (.no) of the same site. You may also have English language of the local site. I saw the difference in price among these sites it may be due to the purchasing capacity of people or due to difference in currency conversion.
  5. Break your trip or start from near by city. You may fly certain section with one airlines and another section with other airlines. It is very helpful if budget airlines fly from your place and another budget airline fly from that destination. For example, if you are flying to Kathmandu from Norway, you may get good price ticket from Paris-Kathmandu or London-Kathmandu or Stockholm-Kathmandu. You may take local or budget airlines to nearby city. Please note to have 3-4 hours of transit so that you will not miss another flight in any case.
  6. Check the price through airlines official site after checking through the flight booking sites. Sometimes same airlines offer same trip in lower price which might be not in the notice of flight booking sites.
  7. Always call travel agency and ask for the suitable offer. You can compare with the price you have seen on net and offered by agency. You can buy the one which suits you most.

These are my own experiences and the system might work differently than I have mentioned here. You may share your experience in similar context for further discussions.
